This grassroots walleye angler brings knowledge and real life experience to you from two and a
half decades of serious fishing time. He spends on average 150
days a year chasing walleyes in every conceivable environment.
INLAND WALLEYE and MASTERING THE CRANKBAIT
GAME are new releases from Kolby. "You've got to be adaptive when you walleye fish...
A
walleye is a walleye wherever they swim, but you won't find a species
more adaptive than a walleye. They become wickedly efficient
hunters with a nack for using the environement to their full advantage.
They are the craftiest of all fish."
"It's funny most fishermen like to go to lakes where the
walleye fishing is phenomenal - you can do no wrong. Don't get me
wrong, I like that too. Nothing's more fun than putting the
wallop on a bunch of big eyes. But for strictly educating walleye
anglers, there will be many misconceptions past along when you catch a
fish per cast or every 5 minutes on a trolling run on a so called,
magical bait.
You would
be better served if some of the television shows would stop fishing
walleye factory lakes and pushing products so much. They should concentrate on spreading out more in the states -
maybe catching some fish under tough conditions in a lake that isn't
world renown. A good walleye fishing education is about
understanding the dynamics of walleye behavior under countless
conditions and water body types...
If you figure out how to catch
walleyes during the toughest times of the year, or on waters where
everyone struggles, you'll really learn the true secrets on what makes
walleyes tick. Learn to catch them in lakes where they aren't so
prevalent or at difficult times of the year and you can catch them
anywhere.
The ability to consistently put walleyes in the boat under any
condition and in any water body will seperate the good angler from the
great one...
One funny example of this
took place when I was writing for IOWA WALLEYE MAGAZINE. It
was on Red Rock Reservoir - a place many only fish for crappies or
white bass. No one in their right mind targets walleyes on this
big reservoir, they don't have a good management system in place for
walleyes so their numbers are pretty low. Not to mention the
place is packed with shad. I spent two days on that lake, 24
hours total, just knowing one or two walleyes would be good. I
ended up catching 2 nice 18 inch fish in the first day. That was
tough fishing and I only caught two fish, but you wouldn't believe the
people that responded positively to the story. I ended up
catching these eyes in 2 feet of water. They really run shallow
on structure or in open water when shad are involved."
His
writings are unique in that he conveys the smallest details to readers
so they won't misinterpret what is being said. If there's one
species of fish that gets misunderstood it's the walleye.
After
many years of flying under the radar and learning valuable lessons from some tough lakes, Kolby decided to get involved in
tournament fishing to see what it was all about.
"The
first year was funny as hell. Our first tournament was shortened
due to a storm coming in. The director made an announcement over
the radio and we didn't get it. We got DQ'd for missing weigh in...
The
second tournament was cancelled because of severe thunderstorms.
Our motor broke down on a trolling bite in the third tournament! Bad karma just kept coming.
Everything stayed working and we didn't miss weigh in by
tournament number four. We finished 11th - one bite away from a
check...
Tournament number 5 was the I.O.W.A state championship.
We won that one by trolling leadcore within a half inch of the
bottom - no higher and no lower. We also made a lot of other
adjustments that helped. These refinements and many more are
covered in my writings. It was a good bite though, luck played
a part in that one with the 8-pound fish on day one.
Through my books I will teach newcomers how to quickly understand the dynamics
of walleyes and how they use each environment. No matter if
they're in
Canada, some Minnesota lake, a Wisconsin flowage, A Dakota
reservoir, Southern reservoirs, rivers, or any other inland lake out
there that has walleyes in it. Maybe you have a tough lake just
down the road that you can't figure out - I'd like you to get involved
today so we can do something about that!
I
also encourage the most
advanced anglers out there to become involved with Inland Walleye's
educational material. Under the gun your decisions better be
quick and they better be correct because time flies out there. I'll
give you many ideas for picking up on subtle movement trends and grasping the idea that
walleyes are like an underwater wheel - they are in a constant state of
movement or transition. If it's not because of spawning related
activity, it's because of environmental factors and food.
Sometimes
an advanced angler won't produce like he should because he fished the
same conditions faced yesterday. Even though today is
slightly different. At other times his focus is distracted.
The mental game is a big part of it.
Focusing on
what the fish are doing and not on what everyone else is doing is
another element that will help your days on the water."
Kolby
has one policy he's adopted for walking you through the walleye's
world. He does not clout education with sponsorship or
advertising dollars. Therefore his work stays centered around the
main objective - helping anglers catch more and bigger walleyes in
tough environments. "It is my goal to help you achieve your
on-the-water goals and to deliver a great product for an afforable
price. Our
unique information is presented in a clean, pure, and dynamic fashion.
The way it used to be.
